Keynote Speakers

TALK: Preparation Processes for Large Earthquakes (Natural and Societal)

Professor, Earth Sciences, University of Southern California
Director, Statewide California Earthquake Center

Yehuda Ben-Zion is the Director of the Statewide California Earthquake Center and Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Southern California. His research is focused on physics of earthquakes and faults using a variety of theoretical tools and observations. Current interests include processes leading to large earthquakes, high resolution imaging of fault zones and the crust, earthquake source properties, near-fault data, composition of continuous seismic waveforms, temporal changes of subsurface properties, dynamic ruptures in geologically relevant structures, brittle damage rheology, analysis of seismic hazards, earthquake forecasting.

TALK: Geophysical Observations and Modeling of Earthquake Fault Zone Behavior

Distinguished Research Fellow, Institute of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica
Director, Earthquake-Disaster and Risk Management (E-DREaM) Center, National Central University

The most extensive scientific interests and contributions are (1) for the understanding of physics of earthquakes through deep scientific drilling (Ma et al., Nature, 2006), and (2) on the innovative seismic data analysis of discovery on isotropic events from fault zone in-situ borehole seismometers (Ma et al., Science, 2012), and (3) for the integration study in seismic hazard mitigation toward Taiwan Earthquake Model (TEM) and the member of Global Earthquake Model (GEM). And, thus, the first public release Taiwan National Seismic Hazard Map with Ministry of Science and Technology in Nov. 2015.

TALK: Next Generation Seismic Networks: Preparing for the Next Big Earthquake

Professor, Geophysics, Caltech
Director, Caltech Seismological Laboratory

Prof. Zhongwen Zhan is a seismologist focused on fiber optic sensing in the last few years but has had broad interest in large earthquakes, subduction zone, ambient noise, and glaciers. He is currently Professor of Geophysics at Caltech, Director of the Caltech Seismological Laboratory.

About

ACES is a multi-lateral grand challenge science research cooperation of APEC, which is one of the eight scientific and technological cooperation projects under the branch of Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation of APEC.

The main goal of ACES is to develop our understanding of earthquake and tsunami science. To achieve this goal, the international workshop has been held every two years for the scientific researchers in APEC economies.
